Florida is a state of the United States. It is located in the southeastern United States, bordering Alabama to the northwest and Georgia to the north. Much of the state’s landmass is a large peninsula with the Gulf of Mexico to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Caribbean to the south. Florida was made the 27th U.S. state in 1845 after a three hundred year period of European rule.

With an area of 65,755 square miles (170,305 km2), it is the third 22 in size among the 50 U.S. states. Florida has the longest coastline in the contiguous United States, not about 1350 miles (2170 km). The state has four major urban areas, a number of smaller industrial cities and small towns.

Florida is nicknamed the “Sunshine State” because of a generally warm subtropical climate in the northern and central areas of the state, a true tropical climate in the southern portion.  The United States Census Bureau estimates that the state population was 18,537,969 in 2009, Florida ranking as the fourth most populous state in the U.S. The city of Tallahassee is the capital, Jacksonville ranks as the largest city and the South Florida area is the largest metropolitan area in the state.

There are many tourist destinations in Florida. The most obvious being Walt Disney World, where I happened to have worked for many years. Then they are Busch Gardens in Tampa and Sea World in Orlando or perhaps Daytona Beach. These are some of the biggest draws in the state when you think about Florida tourist destinations. These are great reasons to visit the sunshine state but we also want to take a look at some of the more less known places that make it worthwhile to visit the “Sunshine State”.

I believe there is so much more to the state of Florida other than some of the more obvious tourist traps. This book will give you alternatives and introduce you to the back roads of the Sunshine state. You can learn about little towns that lure you in with their quaintness and keep you there for a spell with their friendly occupants. Many people crave things to do other than the normal Florida tourist destinations and we try to touch on many of those through videos posted online from the people who visit them.

There are plenty of fun things to do in Florida and it all boils down to what kind of activities that you and your family or travel companions like to do best. Me, I’m a fisherman and I love the fact that I live in what has been referred to as the fishing capitol of the world. Maybe your a beach lover, Florida has some of the best beached around. If you are a bird watcher or a shell collector, Florida has those area covered as well. When it comes to fun things to do in Florida, the choices can even be overwhelming.
